For the first time the ZAC goes to Oschersleben in Germany. For me that is a 400
km drive. It started driving Sunday afternoon and arrived at about 18.30 at
the circuit. Unload the van and go registering and go to scruteneering, that
means a little bit more sleeping time on monday. After that I went out to
diner with a couple of other contenders (what did we have? Schnitzel of course!!).
The free practice was used to learning the track. Oschersleben is a track
with no long straights (goog for me). See how the turns go and in what
gear they should be taken. Especially the 'Triple' can be taken in a couple of
ways.
I was 17th at the end of the practice with a time of 2:02.617.
After the 'debriefing' with a couple of other riders I took the 'Triple' different (read faster) in the 2nd session. A couple of other turns could be taken in a higher gear too and that resulted in 14th place and a best time of 1:58.584.
After some reshuffling of the classes I ended up 16th on the starting grid. I had my usual slow start and was passed by the more powerful bikes. Before the first turn I could get 1 or 2 back on the brakes. After a couple of laps and some successful overtaking I decided to ease off a bit. before me and behind me there was empty tarmac and the temperature was too high to be pushing all the time. I finished 16th (and did not get lapped).
Because of the result in the first race I started from 16th again in the
second race. Lost a lot of places again before the first turn. This time
I couldn't make up some places at the first turn. I was riding around behind a
4 cylinder bike that was doing about the same lap times. We were reeling in
another rider slowly. The guy I was following got past the slower rider pretty
easy but I could not. I managed to pass just before entering the last corner
but was passed again on the straight. After that I could not get past him
again. And I was lapped this time :-(
I ended this race in 18th place.
My best results till now (helped by the low number of riders that came to
Oschersleben).
